Oh no...Omicron!

Yet again, Covid-19 wants to create mayhem for holiday travelers, me included. Mutating an astounding 60 proteins compared to the original Wuhan variant, 39 of which affect the spike protein of the virus. The spike protein is the main antigenic target of antibodies generated naturally through infection, or artificially through vaccines. This is probably why we are seeing an increase in breakthrough infections.

New York appears on its way to becoming a hot spot for the Omicron variant. NBC News reports, "... a massive surge in new positive tests -- 18,276 in one day, up more than 40% in one day and the highest single-day total since January 14". This is sparking many restaurants to close and at-home testing kits to sell out.

Being the original epicenter for the original pandemic back in March 2020, this second wave could be indicative of what the entire nation could be facing within the next few weeks to months with Omicron. Omicron has been shown to be much more transmissible than past variants, so the rate of spread could reach nationwide by Christmas, especially with the mass transit that occurs over the holidays.

Although there are more infections, the severity of disease is decreased in the vaccinated population, with many being asymptomatic or displaying a mild cold-like illness. Below is an image showing the top most common symptoms of Omicron vs Covid-19.

Stay safe, wear a mask, wash your hands, and get tested before and after travel to ensure the well-being of others.
